What We Do
A new pathway to AI policy for the Global South
This site proposes a new pathway to AI policy for the Global South. Called the AI Middle Way, it is a middle-way alternative to the highly regulated Chinese approach and the highly unregulated American approach. Not merely a compromise between that binary, it aims to eliminate data colonialism and provide skills and dignified jobs for billions of citizens.
In 1951, when Alan Turing invented the AI field, he noted that a moment would surely arrive when governments would step in to put guard rails on a technology that could produce massive harm. That moment did seem to arrive in 2023 as ChatGPT soared and an AI Safety movement emerged. But by 2024, the forces of AI acceleration emerged and US markets gained $1.7 trillion in just two years — the most rapid surge of wealth in world history.
Behind the failure of AI governance was the split between the US and China, as both sides sought control over five billion citizens of the Global South. It seemed as if a new cold war was on the rise.
Maybe not.
In the pages of this web site you will learn of a third way. You will find that the term “middle way” has deep philosophic resonance that harkens back to the beginning of human civilization — and, just maybe, it indeed may rapidly take hold before it is too late.
Whether you represent a government, a foundation, or an enterprise, there is a role for you in this coalition.
